Lost Futures

There will be no end to history. The series Lost Futures (2016–2019) captures the spirit of its times – the first Trump era – a rude awakening from the Whiggish dream, and the eon of fake news, evil AI, populism, fascist nostalgia, and disregard for the imminent climate crisis.

The series offers a retelling of contemporary American myths, told from the perspective of a citizen of Central Europe, the buffer zone in between shapeshifting superpowers. Getting lost on its way to liberal democracy, the Zone has once again fell victim to authoritarian regimes. Lost Futures provides a look at the smart technologies and infrastructure that made everything possible.

If we're going to be damned, let's be damned for what we really are.

– Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: TNG
